Constitutional Court of South Africa

Powerful Symbol

In the mid-2000s, the Constitutional Court of South Africa--highest court in the land--moved to Constitutional Hill, long home to notorious segregated prisons. As the court itself puts it, the location "symbolizes the triumph of hope over a troubled past." It's in this spirit that the architecture attempts to envoke a more welcoming than foreboding tone, notable for it's massive windows and thus its (literal) transparency, symbolizing the ideals of past reform and continuing justice.
