The 11-museum system is named Iziko, after the word "hearth," to reflect the stories that these institutions tell. With its long history, diverse peoples and rich natural resources, there are certainly many stories to tell. The system includes such museums as the Social History Centre, South African Museum (the natural history museum), South African National Gallery, the Planetarium and Maritime Centre. There are also several historical buildings with their own, unique collections, such as the Castle of Good Hope, the Old Town House and the Groot Constantia Manor. The museums have wonderful collections and are professionally managed. Entry fees are quite modest, but if you are visiting during one of the eight "commemorative days" (Freedom Day on April 27th, for example), all fees are waived.
