These four beaches - five, if you show up at the right season - are the most famous places on the shores of South Africa. Their beautiful white, sandy shores are renowned throughout the world. In fact, the Clifton Beaches have been certified as "Blue Flag" - meeting the stringent standards for environmental management and the cleanest waters of any public beaches. Despite their chilly waters (they are, after all, on the cusp between the South Atlantic and the Indian Ocean), these beaches are popular destination for Cape Towners and visitors alike. Each of the beaches has its own particular character. Beach One, with its strong surf, is a favorite of surfers as well as adventurous swimmers; Beach Two is known as a sports beach, with volleyball and other sports; Beach Three is known for its gay scene; while Beach Four, the southernmost and with the least surf, is the most popular for families. Moses Beach (so named for its bulrushes), loses its sand six months of the year, until the tides bring the beach back again.
