As the official residence of the President of Singapore, the Istana was originally built in the 1860s as the residence of the British colonial governor, and is now the symbol of national pride of Singapore. The beautiful building and grounds are open to the public only but a few days a year, including the second day of the Chinese New Year and National Day (July 30th). The Istana Heritage Gallery, located at 35 Orchard Road, is open during the week (except Wednesdays). Visitors can see displays on the history of the residence and the nation. Admission is free and an MRT station is nearby.
