As the city center of Glasgow, Merchant City was initially developed in the 1700s. Many of the city's tobacco and sugar lords settled this part of town, and as the development of the area progressed, many merchants took to setting up markets there to sell their fruits, vegetables, and other items.
Today, Merchant City is a renowned shopping district with many high-end shops and stores. You'll find many stores in the neighborhood like Ralph Lauren, Escada, and Bose. If possible, it's ideal to visit in September when the annual Merchant City Festival is held.
