Historic Fortress

Dominating Edinburgh's skyline (and, for that matter, its history), Edinburgh Castle is a historic icon with its roots all the way back to the the 12th century (some of which survive to this day). As one of the most besieged castles in the world, this fortress has played a major role in Scotland's history.

Walking into the castle is a pretty humbling experience; suffice it to say: massive is a bit of an understatement. But never fear! Tours are offered, and you can get an audio guide in one of eight languages. And once you're inside, you'll be able to see everything from the vaults (home to many a prisoner) to the crown jewels, a 12th century chapel, and even the soldiers' dog cemetery—and that's just the start of it.
