Worship, Community, Culture

The Grand Choral Synagogue is more than just a place of worship. This is also a place of community support and cultural education that acts as a hub for many Jewish organizations in St. Petersburg. Check the very detailed and extensive website for any events and news.

The Synagogue itself dates back to 1830. Because of the restrictions that Jews faced in Russia, they were unable to build synagogues. The military chapel that was near the barracks was used for Jewish prayer services until 1865, when formal construction of the Grand Choral Synagogue began. Visit to see the lofty dome and master carpentry work that date back to 1888.
