19th Century Theatre

The Tapia Theater is built in 1824 and is considered one of the oldest free-standing theatre buildings in the Americas. Named for a Puerto Rican actor and poet, the theatre is located across from Plaza Colon.

Since the theatre was constructed, it has been important to San Juan's cultural life. Performances there have included opera, drama, and other forms of musical theatre. Ballet has also been performed on the Tapia's stage. The renowned ballerina Anna Pavlova performed at the Tapia at one time. When you're visiting the city, be sure to check out this important cultural and historical landmark.
