Plaza de Mercado de Rio Piedras is located in the university district of San Juan and offers visitors the opportunity to delve into the local culture. The markets have a vibrant atmosphere, with plenty of interesting and entertaining vendors offering their wares.
The main market hall is flanked by two arcades, so there are plenty of stalls and stores to explore. Aside from plenty of fresh, local produce, there are also lots of street food vendors, along with a broad variety of handmade crafts and souvenirs to choose from.
Many of the vendors will allow you to sample some of the local pastries, produce and meats. It's also possible to purchase locally-made souvenirs here more cheaply than in many other parts of the city.
