Historic Military Fort

Castillo San Felipe del Morro is located in the San Juan National Historic Site and is one of two forts once used to protect the town from attack. The fort was built in the 16th century and was designed to protect the entrance to San Juan Bay to defend the city from attack from ships entering the bay

The historic landmark is located atop a hill, so it is a bit of a climb from the port, but the whole site is easily accessible by foot. The scenic views over the bay and the city from the top of the fort are worth the climb. If you prefer not to walk up the hill from the port, there is a free tram that runs from the waterfront up to the forts.
