More than Meets the Eye

Don't be fooled by the Igreja de São Roque's humble facade. The Church contains eight different chapels: the most famous is the Chapel of St. John the Baptist. Constructed in the 18th Century, this chapel was the most expensive chapel ever built in Europe at the time. It was constructed in Rome with gold and precious stones and then blessed by the Pope before being sent to Lisbon and reassembled here. The Church is the earliest Jesuit church in Portugal and one of the first Jesuit churches in the world.
