The Bohemian Ravine

Named for the coastal gulch it straddles (barranco means "ravine" in Spanish), this district is one of Lima's gems: a quieter, artsy escape from downtown. Once an elite retreat for the wealthy and now something of an artist's haven, Barranco still includes many striking examples of colonial and Republican-style architecture. Besides a lively spread of cafes, restaurants, bars, and music clubs, Barranco entices with Lima's museum of contemporary art (Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, or MAC), landmarks such as the wooden 19th-century Bridge of Sighs (Puente de los Suspiros) that spans the ravine, and some nice surfing beaches.
