The Oude Kerk, or Old Church is located in the heart of Amsterdam, and built right on the ramparts of the city. It is the oldest building in the city - although originally a smaller stone church dedicated to Saint Nicholas, over time it has grown into the imposing medieval monument you see today.
The Old Church not only serves as a place of worship but also as a concert hall, wedding venue and an exhibition and reception space. It holds a unique place in Amsterdam’s history: here, fisherman have repaired their nets, Sweelinck once played the organ, and Rembrandt had his wedding. Generations of residents from Amsterdam, including the naval hero of the Heemskerck, are buried in this European monument.
