Ancient archaeological sites in Mexico are still being found and excavated, even today. This dramatic pyramid, which looks like its top half has been wrenched away, was only discovered in 1998. Excavation began in 2002, and the site was opened to public access in 2011. The pyramid was built by the Otomi people, who carefully watched the movement of the heavens and designed their buildings to mimic their movements. The moon moves up and down the pyramid according to its cycle, and the whole site is built to face celestial north. When you visit, bear in mind that access is strictly controlled, as the site is located on a private hacienda.
