The Cones

Many of the several hundred now-abandoned mines littering the hinterland of Mineral de Pozos are off-limits to the public or at least challenging to visit. Mina de Santa Brigida, however, is a popular, easy accessible destination for guided tours out of town. It's among the best-known silver mines in the area, largely due to its three tall cone-shaped smelters built in the 16th century. These striking features, which bear an uncanny resemblance to Egyptian pyramids, embody the stark beauty of Mineral de Pozos's many ruins.

A visit to Mina de Santa Brigida gives you greater insight into the region's historic mining industry, which until its dramatic crash in the early 1900s made Mineral de Pozos a prosperous and bustling city.
