Water in the Desert

If you want to take some time to enjoy swimming, fishing, boating and just relaxing by the water, even in the warmth of central Mexico, you can find several reservoirs in the Guanajuato area. One of the most popular is Presa Nueva de Jalpa ("The New Dam"), which has created a fresh, beautiful artificial lake.

Ever since Guanajuato was founded, there have been attempts to keep the river from flooding the city during spring high water. The solution was a series of dams, built over two centuries, which not only protect the city but provide some lovely recreation areas.
