The popular Tulum beach-side ruins are close to Cancun, but in spite of the crowds it's still an atmospheric place.
If you hire one of the entertaining tour guides, you'll get the extra dimension you need to get a real feel for the meaning of the ruins. There's a little harbor which is reached from the sea through a little gap in the reef, and it's fascinating to understand how the place worked in the days of the Mayan civilization and how important it was.
Unless you come on a boat tour, you'll have a bit of a walk from the road to the beach, so you might want to wear comfortable shoes, but there's an open-air shuttle bus service too. And take your swimwear, as the water nearby is lovely and great for swimming.
