Tsukiji Fish Market

World's Freshest Sushi

While sea-faring Tokyo is home to many fish markets, Tsukiji Fish Market is undoubtedly its most famous. Though one might not expect a fish market to draw in the masses, Tsukiji is one of the largest markets of its kind in the world and attracts many sightseers in addition to its regular buyers and sellers. Each day, the market witnesses transactions involving 2,000 tons of marine products. One of the highlights of visiting this market is being able to witness the celebrated tuna auction, but be warned - getting in as a tourist to witness this auction is extremely limited. Don't fret if you didn't make the cut because the Outer Market houses a myriad of related markets, stalls and sushi restaurants proudly serving up the freshest sushi in town.

Utrip Tips

* If you wish to witness the auction, prepare to arrive very early. First, you must apply at the Osakana Fukyu Center (Fish Information Center) at the Kachidoki Gate. It's best to arrive at 5:00am or earlier, as it is a first-come, first-serve queue. Viewers are limited to 120 total per day, half at 5:25am and the second half at 5:50am. For those that don't want the early start, the wholesale market opens to tourists at 10:00am.

* Tsukiji Fish Market is set to move to Toyosu in the near future, although the move has been postponed until winter 2017/early 2018 as of this publication.

* The outer market contains vendors and food stalls, and is one of the best places for the freshest sushi in Tokyo.
