Established in 1872, the Tokyo National Museum is the nation's oldest national museum and one of the largest art museums worldwide. The museum mainly preserves Japanese art and archaeological relics, but it also showcases collections that represent other parts of Asia. The museum features five exhibition buildings that house thematic galleries. Its Japanese gallery features highlight exhibits that focus on the Japanese tea ceremony, Japanese swords, masks, and stunning pieces of ancient calligraphy. Throughout the other galleries, you'll find historic pieces of pottery, sculpture, and various temporary art exhibits. As one of the most important of the country's museums, it's a must-see cultural attraction.
