Dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken

An enormous 40-foot-high torii gate greets you at the entrance of the 200-acre park. Created from cypress and copper, the Meiji Shrine is situated in a breathtaking Shibuya evergreen forest and honors the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. Throughout the grounds there are various walking paths and a lovely Inner Garden with beautiful irises on display. As one of the most popular of Tokyo shrines, this elegant Shinto landmark attracts many visitors and foreign dignitaries. Near the main shrine building, there is a museum that features temporary exhibits. When visiting, be sure to see the Treasure House which displays various treasures owned by the emperor and empress.
