Mosaic-Strewn Basilica

Located on the beautiful island of Torcello, the Torcello Cathedral is a celebrated example of Byzantine-Venetian architecture. As one of the most ancient churches in the Veneto, it is popularly visited by tourists. The church, in many ways, is a symbol of early Venice before it rose in strength and power. Constructed in 639, the basilica is especially famous for its 13th century mosaics that reflect honor for the Virgin Mary. In fact, the basilica was dedicated to Mary around the year 1008. If you're interested in early Venice or the Veneto's lovely churches, this is a must-visit site.
