Wealth and power were no protectors against the plague, but the wealthy and powerful could build compounds to protect themselves. The compound Scuola Grande di San Rocco near the church of San Rocco (protector against sickness and the plague) was the Venetian nobility's attempt to escape the plague. While it didn't save them from the plague, they did adorn it with the work of master artist Jacopo Tintoretto. The walls and ceilings of the building are covered with his masterpieces depicting the Annunciation and a scene on the ceiling of Adam and Eve and other noteworthy stories in the bible.
