A Church of Many Colors

When you find yourself wandering the quieter streets of Cannaregio, make a point to look at this 12th century complex which includes a church, a monastery and an old hospital. It looks plain from the outside, but it has a rich history and is full of intricate and elaborate artwork done by Palma il Giovane in the 16th century that depicts historical events that took place here. Founded by friars and used to nurture the less fortunate, including impoverished women, there are paintings of hospital scenes, but also of violent conquests and struggles that took place over the years to keep the place running. The complex is a place of beauty and solace and helps to (literally) illustrate a lesser known facet of the history of Venice.
