This unique museum opened in 1959 and is therefore one of the most modern museums in Venice. However, on the contrary it holds some of the oldest and culturally richest pieces of any Venetian museum. The Icons Museum in Venice exhibits a grand collection of Byzantine and post-Byzantine examples of iconic art from the 14th through 18th centuries. Due to the large Byzantine influence on the city, the Venetian Greek community largely supports the museum. Besides the icons, the exhibitions also present illuminated manuscripts and sacred parchments with golden embroideries that once belonged to ancient archbishops.
