A Church of Murder and Mystery

To unassuming passerby, the Chiesa di San Polo looks to be a modest 9th-century Byzantine brick church. However, this little church has a murder-shrouded history, darker even than the scenes depicted in the art lining the walls and ceiling -- such as Tintoretto’s Last Supper and Giandominico Tiepolo’s disturbing Stations of the Cross. The architecture is reflecting of Gothic elements, in particular the molded and twisted floral ornaments, the warheads of the aisle, and the three naves typical of Venetian-Byzantine architecture.
