The Chiesa di San Lorenzo does not look like much from the outside, however, the inside is a sight to be seen. The central plan is octagonal, and the interior is dominated by the numbers 4 and 8. This is evident in the commanding dome, which is lit by 8 elliptical windows and whose ribs form an 8-pointed star--a salute to Islamic revival architecture. Inside there is also a famous replica of the Holy Shroud by Guarino Guarini. The advanced layout of this relatively small church, dripping in gold and polychrome marble, give the effect of stupefaction and wonder that baroque art aimed to instill in its viewers. Don’t judge this book by it’s cover, or you’ll miss some truly awe-inspiring artwork and architecture.
