Sitting High on the Hill

A ten-minute drive or moderate walk on a winding road outside of Taormina will reward you with some of the most astounding and breathtaking views in Italy. It is here that you'll find Comune di Castelmola.

While the town itself is charming on its own, the main focal points involve the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Rocca and Castello di Castelmola, or the medieval remains of Castlelmola Castle, which sit atop a precipitous rocky ridge 530 meters above Taormina. The breathtaking panoramic views of Mt Etna and the surrounding landscape make the hike to the top worth the effort. And if you tire, a glass of almond wine at one of the local eateries will refuel your energy and make you never want to leave.

Utrip Tips

*Though it's a bit of a climb to get here, the 360° view from Castelmola is unparalleled.

*While you're here, also check out the famed Turrisi Bar--a phallic themed establishment.

*If you need a break, enjoy a glass of almond wine, a local specialty.

*On your way up, don't forget to visit the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Rocca.
