An Ancient Church

One of the founding churches of The Church (and possibly where mass was first openly practiced), Santa Maria in Trastevere’s roots reach deep into the past: back to Pope Calixtus in the 220s, in fact.

While the floor plan is from the 340s, most of the nave and basilica is from around the 12th century, and the 22 massive granite columns and the main door came from the Baths of Caracalla, which was a few kilometers south across the Tiber. So if you’re looking to root around in Rome’s immense history, this is a definite must for your trip plan.
