Built in the 8th century, Santa Maria di Cosmedin houses relics like St. Valentine's skull and features gobs of gorgeous architecture including an early medieval choir enclosure, beautifully inlaid tile floors, and the tallest medieval bell tower in all of Rome.
However, the main draw for many tourists is the "Bocca della Verità (The Mouth of Truth). Made famous in the movie Roman Holiday, legend is that if you tell a lie with your hand inside its mouth the hand will be bitten off—a fearsome reputation for a feature thought to have originally been a drain covering.
