Straight out of the Assassin’s Creed video game series (seriously though, this building is featured in Assassin’s Creed) this beautiful 5th centaury basilica is the product of a 1925 renovation that drastically reshaped its decadent interior into one of Romanesque simplicity. The 16 different columns that line the interior were all stolen from earlier architecture on the Palatine and the Aventine Hills and are all different. Even if you don’t feel like going inside, or scaling the tower, this is a cool quick detour from the Capitoline Hill and there are plenty other ancient buildings nearby to gander at.
