Even though it's seen better days, the Colosseum remains one of the icons of Imperial Rome—and for good reason. It was an engineering masterpiece and an architectural icon, and its colossal impact on world history still echoes today.
Completed in 80 AD, the Colosseum was created to house gladiatorial fights, theatrical performances, mock sea battles, and animal hunts. Although today it is a bit run-down after almost 2000 years of use and natural weathering, the Colosseum retains the rugged charm of an arena that was created in the image of Imperial Rome. You will probably want to buy tickets to the Colosseum before arriving (to skip the long ticket line); you can even package it with other big attractions. Either way, be prepared to leave with a sense of wonder for this amazing piece of history.
