Although nothing remains today, this site used to be home to the spectacular Circo Massimo, which was the largest stadium in the ancient world (dwarfing the colosseum). It was here that brave men raced chariots and emperors put on mass entertainment for the Roman populace. Imagine if you can 250,000 seated spectators roaring as they watch animal fights, athletic tournaments, and horseracing. After the last races took place in 549AD the Circo Massimo was completely looted and stripped and today the site is home to a public park.
