Momento Mori

While tourists are torn as to whether the Capuchin Crypt is gruesome or holy, one thing's for sure: this destination is not for the faint of heart.

For hundreds of years, the Capuchin monks have arranged the bodies of their dead into displays of art, meant to be a kind of momento mori: a reminder to the viewer of mortality (a theme also reflected in the museum above). Visitors to the crypt are required to be respectful at all times; this includes dressing conservatively, and photography isn't allowed.
