Breathtaking Art

The basilica of Saint Mary Major is the largest Roman Catholic Marian church in Rome, and it packs an artistic punch that help it separate itself from the other churches dedicated to Mother.

The mosaics found in Santa Maria Maggiore are not just incredibly beautiful works of Late Antique art; they are also one of the oldest representations of the Virgin Mary in Christian Late Antiquity. And while there are other churches in Rome dedicated to Mary, (such as Santa Maria in Trastevere, Santa Maria in Aracoeli, Santa Maria sopra Minerva), the greater size of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore—and its awe-inspiring artistic prowess—justifies the adjective by which it is distinguished from the other 25 (bajillion) churches named in honor of Jesus' mother.
