The Altar of Peace

The Ara Pacis is a simple, one-exhibit museum that opened in 2006, and was the first significant structure to open up in the historic center since the time of Mussolini, and therefore has attracted a great deal of criticism from the city’s preservationists. The museum is the third most visited site in Rome, and is home to the “Altar of Peace”, a wonderfully preserved and restored sacrificial altar dating back to 9BC.
