The Most Famous Bell Tower in the World

After eight and a half centuries, the name of the architect of the bell tower for the Pisa Cathedral is still under debate - for which, no doubt, he (whoever he is) probably gives thanks. The butt of jokes for all that time, due to the unfortunate lack of a proper foundation, the leaning tower is nonetheless a charming building, reflecting the neo-Classical revival of the 12th century. Yes, it's quirky: During the two centuries of its construction, efforts were made to compensate for its list and, in recent years the building was partially straightened to save it from collapse, adjusting the 5.5º lean to just under 4º, but it is still obviously not straight. When visiting Tuscany, take time to stop by this lovely city that still retains much of its medieval and Renaissance architecture and flavor. If you wish to go to the top of the tower, you can order tickets in advance from here.
