By all means, visit the Leaning Tower and the most popular sites in Pisa, but don't neglect to spend some time at the National Museum of San Matteo. Off the beaten track, it is often practically empty of visitors; it's almost as if you have the entire museum to yourself. It is a wonder why, too, since its collection is stunning: Sculpture and paintings from the medieval and Renaissance periods fill every gallery.
