Located in Piazza Verdi at the corner of Via Maqueda and Via Cavour, the Teatro Massimo opera house is renowned as the largest opera house in Italy and the 3rd largest in all of Europe. Constructed amidst the cultural rebirth and economic prosperity of the Belle Epoque, it is characterized by its neoclassical architecture, phenomenal acoustics, and world class performances. Although one of Italy's most famous opera houses, some visitors are most interested in the theater's front steps, where the final scene of The Godfather III was filmed in 1990. Tuesday–Sunday during the day, 30 minute guided tours (€8) are available to visitors from 9:30-17:00, and pre-arranged backstage tours are available every other Monday.
