If you want to find the heart of Sicily, Monte Pellegrino is the hallowed ground which you seek. Hop on the 812 bus as it bends its way around winding mountain roads and you'll feel civilization start to slip away. Monte Pellegrino commands sweeping panoramic views of Sicily's rugged and wild coast, but this isn't what draws the streams of devout pilgrims. In 1166 Santa Rosalia, daughter to William II, cast aside her mantle of privilege to lead the lonely life of a hermit on this selfsame mountain. The cave where she made her home is now a church and acoustic fun. Another cave of note houses some choice Paleolithic drawings. Note: The 812 bus' last stop is the Santa Rosalia sanctuary.
