A Medieval Fortress

This hilltop fortress, whose foundations date all the way back to 1275, evolved into a fantastic hexagonal stronghold in the 14th century. Located atop the Vomero hill, Castel Sant'Elmo towers over Naples. Over the years, the fortress changed hands from one foreign ruler to the next: famous residents include Don Pedro de Toledo and Charles V of the Hapsburg dynasty. Neapolitans now use Castel Sant'Elmo as a multifunctional venue for contemporary visual and performing arts. With a trip to this fortress, you'll get to see the ancient history of Naples come to life. The 360-degree views of the city are also tremendous here.
