La Mescita is a legitimate hole-in-the-wall, far away from tourist crowds and deep into the territory of the locals. The restaurant can be very peaceful, but it's often flooded with local workers and students around lunchtime, so you'll need to be assertive in order to win a seat and to order. The menu changes daily and includes mostly sandwiches, but there are also pasta specials and some meat dishes: the popular vote heralding eggplant as the side dish of choice. The wines are good and inexpensive, completing a delicious meal as authentic as they come.
