As one of the many buildings that make up the Florence Cathedral, Giotto’s Campanile provides a fantastic view of the city. Built to look like a painting, the tower is inlaid with colorful geometric patterns of marble, giving it a rich and ornate exterior.
Sculptures and panels depicting the story of Genesis, the great philosophers, the planets, mathematics, poetry and more also adorn the exterior. When standing at the base of the tower, notice that although the top levels are high in the sky, they appear to look the same size as the bottom level. In fact, the top three levels are built each slightly larger than the one before, so that when viewed from the bottom, the tower gives the illusion of being consistent in size, countering the effect of perspective. A true piece of history and art, be sure to visit Giotto’s Campanile.
