The earliest cathedral of Catania dates to 1079; however, this and other incarnations were destroyed by earthquake or eruptions from nearby Mount Etna. Today, there are only traces of the early Norman structure, but the current cathedral is quite impressive in its own right.
Begun in 1711, the current cathedral has been an ongoing project. Its dome, for instance, dates to 1802. The interior of the cathedral is laid out in a Latin cross floor plan and boasts many 17th century artworks and beautiful stained glass windows. The cathedral is easily one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city and features on city tours.
