Malahide is a seaside village outside Dublin with a castle that's everyone's idea of what a castle should be. It dates back to the 12th century and has acquired all the historical associations you'd expect as it passed down the ages as the Talbot family seat.
The guided tours are recommended, but the lovely, extensive grounds have plenty of other attractions, like the children's playground, tennis, pitch and putt golf, botanical gardens, craft and souvenir shops and restaurants. Just walking around the wooded grounds is a pleasure in itself.
