Layers of History

Spike Island rises out of Cork Harbour, but it comes just about awash in history: a lot of it of the edgy variety. It's gone through more than a few incarnations, and it shows off the tattoos to visitors.

Originally home to a monastery, the island became host to a huge star-shaped fort in the mid-1800s: a bastion that allowed its defenders to fire upon basically any point on the landmass. Ultimately it came to host what was at the time the world's biggest prison. A quick ferry ride from Cobh, Spike Island hosts a wide range of tours--including nighttime forays through some super-grim (and maybe haunted) prison cells....
