Inside the Prison Walls

Built in 1824, the Cork City Gaol was long a women-only prison until the very end of its career, when, in 1922 during the Irish Civil War, it harbored anti-treaty/Republican men as well as their female counterparts.

The gaol remains a thoroughly imposing sight with its castle-like Georgian/Gothic design and soaring walls. Touring the prison interior is still apt to give you a few chills--especially if you opt for the nighttime jaunts, when it's hard to shake the sense you're sharing these corridors with a few phantoms....
