Titanic's Jumping-Off Point

The seaport of Cobh is a major tourist attraction, blessed with some fantastic history as well as gorgeous vintage architecture.

One of its historical claims to fame (or infamy) is that the town served as the last port-of-call for the RMS Titanic on the doomed passenger liner's trans-Atlantic voyage to New York City; a memorial in town honors the lives lost when the ship collided with an iceberg most of the way across. The mighty Cathedral Church of St. Colman dominates the town's skyline, while just offshore beckons Spike Island, known for its 19th-century star-shaped fort and prison.
