The Nordic House is a creation of world-renowned Finish architect Alvar Aalto. As with many of Aalto's works, the architect supervised interior decor as well. The results are an inner and outer calm reflecting the venue's central Reykjavik setting,
The Nordic House aims to provide a centre for Nordic arts and culture, with emphasis on music, film, and literature. Centre exhibitions, however, also reach beyond the arts to include Nordic cultural and scientific questions such as warming in the European Arctic.
Regular programs range from classic concerts to children's folktales to maintenance of a public library. The center is host to the Reykjavik International Film Festival. Visitors also enjoy dining in the centre's Aalto Bistro which features Scandinavian cuisine with Central European accents.
