Heart of the City

Syntagma (Constitution) Square is the center and the birthplace of modern Athens, the heart of the commercial and political district. It's in front of the Parliament building, once the royal palace. That's where an uprising forced King Otto to grant the people their first constitution, and it's also where protests about austerity and debt were centered in the years following the 2008 financial crisis.

There is a ceremonial hourly changing of the guard in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

There's a central fountain, and you can relax at outdoor cafes near the entrance to the metro station, making it a popular meeting place as well as a historic space.

Utrip Tips

*Be sure to check out the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It happens every hour on the hour right in front of the parliament building in Syntagma Square.

*There's also a really cool mini museum in the subway station.
