The Heart of the Ancient City

The Agora is today an open space full of the footprints of buildings that have disappeared. It's an archaeological treasure house, containing the remains of buildings in a space that's been used since 3,000 years before Christ.

There was a long period as a cemetery before its later uses as a town square came to the fore. The agora is sometimes described as a market place but it was a multi-layer and multi-purpose space where people traded worshipped and governed at different times over the ages. Today, it's a good place to sit and meditate on what the area has seen in the past.
